“Have to speak honestly”- Nuno opens up about why Tottenham’s record signing has been missing in action

Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo has given his verdict on the club's loss to Dutch side Vitesse in the UEFA Conference League.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo explains Tanguy Ndombele situation

According to Evening Standard, Nuno Espirito Santo went on to explain what is happening with Tanguy Ndombele at Tottenham. The midfielder has been left out of the squad to face Wolves on Sunday but refused to divulge much and only pointed out that the player will need to do something about it.

Tangy Ndombele still holds the distinction of being the record signing for Spurs when he signed from Lyon in 2019. However, if what we have seen so far is anything to go by, he is yet to prove that he was worth the outlay. An underwhelming first season under Jose Mourinho meant that he was often excluded from the matchday squads.

Even interim manager Ryan Mason did not pick him for the remaining few games of last season. However, the biggest surprise has been his exclusion from Nuno Espirito Santo ever since he took over. He did not feature in the preseason and was also snubbed from the first two games of this season.

Nuno went on to claim that Ndombele will not be featuring against Wolves as well. His reasoning was vague but it pointed to something in the ilk that there needs to be some effort on the player’s part.

“What happened in the past I can’t even think about and I don’t mention it out of respect. What I can tell you is that Tanguy is with us, he works but we have to speak honestly. And to take the best out of Tanguy, it has to come from himself. It has to come from himself. I don’t want to go much farther than that but it has to come from himself.”

Tanguy Ndombele could be looking at an exit.

However, on being coaxed a bit further on the issue, his reply probably hinted at an exit for the Frenchman.

“First of all I must speak to Tanguy before even addressing you. We already had a chance to talk but it must come from himself. I said it before: my job here is not to convince players to play for Tottenham Hotspur, it is to prepare players to play for Tottenham Hotspur.”

Another exclusion might just mean something is brewing behind the scenes. After all, the player is apparently available and still not being picked. Spurs could definitely use a player like him in full flow but as things stand, an exit looks more likely.
