Paulo Fonseca reveals details behind failed Tottenham move
According to Football.london, Paulo Fonseca went on to reveal the details behind his collapsed move to Tottenham. There seemed to be an agreement already with club chairman Daniel Levy. However, Fabio Paratici pulled out in the 11th hour due to a change of mind and instead went on to hire Nuno Espirito Santo.
Back in June, there was quite the furore regarding Tottenham’s managerial appointment. After all, it was way back in April that Jose Mourinho was sacked and Ryan Mason had completed his interim stint in May. So, it became rather important Spurs found a new full-time manager and soon.
One of the names considered during the initial stages was Paulo Fonseca after he left his role at Roma. Talks looked to have progressed well and it even reached close to completion. However, rather dramatically, the deal collapsed at that stage. That made Spurs eventually switch their attention to Nuno and he was appointed right at the end of June.
Fonseca was pretty close to being appointed
Nonetheless, Paulo Fonseca went on to reveal why the appointment collapsed despite being so close.
“All the details were settled. I was really prepared for a new adventure at Tottenham but, with the general manager (Paratici) coming in, we had some disagreements that were difficult to overcome. I really want to coach the best teams, but I cannot compromise my ideas, I cannot compromise my values just to coach a big team.”
“The truth is that the president (Levy) and the sporting director (Steve Hitchen) always argued that the team should be offensive, should be attractive, should be a dominant team which went in the direction of what my teams are, in essence. And with the entry of the new general director, things changed a little bit. They wanted to go in another direction and, obviously, it wasn’t possible to develop something I didn’t believe in.”

It’s hard to say if Spurs really made a mistake with Fonseca. Or rather, it’s too early to judge from Nuno’s reign so far that has seen only two games being played. Nonetheless, Nuno is an experienced name in the Premier League and looks like the safer option. Only time will tell if Spurs made any mistake.
