Tottenham could have Giovani Lo Celso & Cristian Romero unavailable for selection for up to 3 matchdays
According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur have sparked a row with the Argentinian national team and could now have Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso unavailable for selection for up to 3 matchdays.
As per the UK rules & guidelines, every player that returns from ‘red list’ countries shall have to quarantine themselves up to a minimum of ten days. Spurs knew this going in and released Romero & Lo Celso leave for international duty.
This is because Spurs apparently had an agreement that Lo Celso & Romero would be released after the nation’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil on the 5th of September. Thus, it would mean that the two players would miss the opening game post the international break, which is scheduled on the 11th of September against Crystal Palace.
However, according to Argentinian manager Lionel Scaloni, Spurs had no such agreement in place and their players will be available for the country’s games till the end of the international break, including their clash against Bolivia on the 9th of September.
Following Argentina’s 3-1 victory against Venezuela, Scaloni said (h/t Sky Sports):
“We gave the list for the three games, and there are no doubts about that. The players are here to play all three games. We never had a refusal from the clubs. We spoke and reached a conclusion that they had to come.”

Thus, Tottenham could now miss the Argentinian duo for the aforementioned game against Crystal Palace, a Europa Conference League tie, and the club’s London derby against Chelsea on the 19th of September. This could cause another stir in the country vs club debate, and it remains to be seen what Spurs will do about this situation.
