Transfer News: Lautaro Martinez rejected the chance to join Tottenham
According to transfer news from Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go Podcast, Lautaro Martinez rejected the chance to join Tottenham. Spurs and Fabio Paratici were keen on the Inter Milan striker but the Italian side were not really keen on selling and Martinez also wanted to stay back and play in the Champions League.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the future of Harry Kane over the summer, Spurs decided to make moves for other strikers. Lautaro Martinez was someone that interested Spurs and Paratici. The 24-year-old had just come off a Serie A winning season with Inter and was one of the hottest names in his position.
Hence, Spurs went all-out on him. The club were ready to smash their transfer record with an offer of €90million out of which €70million was guaranteed. While the offer was satisfactory, it would seem the sale of Romelu Lukaku changed Inter’s mind. Add to that, Martinez wanted to play Champions League football which clearly was not possible at Spurs.
Tottenham made an offer for Lautaro Martinez which was rejected
That made the player reject the move as well. Transfer guru Fabrizio Roman shed some light on the whole thing on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast.
“Tottenham made a proposal for €70million plus €20million add-ons, to arrive to €90million total for Lautaro Martinez, the price tag that Inter were asking. The proposal was €70million guaranteed, €10million easy add-ons – really easy to be reached, appearances of the player with Tottenham – and €10million related to the most complicated part of Lautaro Martinez’s career, like winning titles.
“Inter were absolutely not prepared to sell Lautaro Martinez, because this proposal from Tottenham was after they sold Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea. From what I’m told, also Lautaro Martinez wanted to stay. He was not so tempted, because he wants to play Champions League football. He was talking with Tottenham, yes, but it was not something agreed on personal terms.”

Martinez is a huge talent and he could have bolstered the attack rather significantly. While this would have been a huge deal, Spurs cannot do much about it, to be honest. The situation was not favourable from any angle except from Spurs’ point.
