Tottenham Hotspur set to overtake Arsenal in UEFA rankings
In a historic moment for Tottenham, they are set to overtake rivals Arsenal in the UEFA rankings for the first time in 29 years (h/t Daily Mail). The climb above is due to Spurs playing this season’s UEFA Conference League while Arsenal are not playing European football at all.
The bragging rights for North London have been a huge factor for Arsenal and Tottenham. Both clubs have been at it since Arsenal’s move to Highbury in 1913 which Spurs claimed to be their territory. They have faced each other in every season barring 1977-78 and the rivalry has escalated to the present day.
Spurs have gained a lot of ground on Arsenal who have been on the decline for a while. While they slipped and slipped, Spurs found ways to improve and finally become equal and in some cases, better. In another huge win for Spurs, they will be moving above Arsenal in the UEFA rankings by the end of the year.
Arsenal are currently 12th and Spurs, 13th based on the last five years results. However, Spurs managed to qualify for the Conference League while Arsenal missed out on European football. Points Spurs accumulate through wins and draws in the group stages will go into improving Spurs’ tally and ultimately overtake Arsenal for the first time in 29 years (h/t Daily Mail).
