Alasdair Gold reveals how Nuno Espirito Santo has had little time to work with the full Tottenham squad

Speaking on the Gold and Guest Podcast, Tottenham Hotspur correspondent for Football.london Alastair Gold revealed his conversation with Nuno Espirito Santo. The Spurs gaffer told Gold about the scarce amount of time he has had to work with the whole squad this season.

Football is a fast-moving sport and only the last result matters. For Spurs, that makes for grim reading as they were outclassed by Chelsea in the London derby on the weekend. Prior to that loss, Spurs had drawn to Rennes and lost to Crystal Palace. Now, if we go back a few more days, Spurs were top of the league with three out of three wins.

It’s easy to point the finger at Nuno for this but the fact is that he has not had a fully fit squad or something remotely close to it available. Injuries, quarantine and suspensions played a huge part in those faltering results as Spurs were down to bare bones on most of those games. Plus, one needs to understand that Nuno is still new to the side and needs to work with those players on a regular basis.

The gaffer shared his thoughts with Gold that the latter shared on his podcast. Gold spoke about how Nuno only had a week or two with his full squad.

“Spurs dropped off what they were doing so well. That is a fitness thing – Nuno told me afterwards, the amount of time to work with the full squad. I looked at it properly. It’s the amount of time he’s had to work with his players. As a full squad, I think we’re talking two to three weeks.”

He added how the international break ruled out a host of players with quarantine and injuries.

“International break takes three players who were likely to start a lot of matches away, isolates them in Croatia. Five others get injured.”

It’s is surely understandable that Nuno is still figuring things out at the club and he has not been helped by these constant problems. However, such is the nature of things at the top level. Nuno will have to figure out a way to arrest this slump if they want to avoid another season like the last one.
