Tony Adams believes Jose Mourinho was doing a great job at Tottenham Hotspur before they sacked him
Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Daily Mail), Arsenal legend Tony Adams claimed he believes that Jose Mourinho was ‘getting it together’ at Tottenham Hotspur before they sacked him.
The Portuguese head coach was appointed by Daniel Levy in November 2019, just a few days after the club had sacked Mauricio Pochettino. Mourinho quickly took to life in London as he knew it well from his Chelsea days.
The former Real Madrid boss also did well in the second half of the 2019/20 season as he managed to lead the team to a 6th place finish, just seven points off the Top 4 and three points above North London rivals Arsenal.
Spurs were cruising in the first half of the last season under the Portuguese and were also top of the table at one point of time. He had changed the way Harry Kane was playing, and Heung-Min Son had also become a great goal-scoring threat for the club.
However, it all changed in a few months, and Levy sacked Mourinho just a week before the club’s first Cup final in a long time. Arsenal legend Tony Adams believes the Portuguese was actually doing a great job at the club. He told Sky Sports (h/t Daily Mail):
‘I actually thought Mourinho was doing a fantastic job for Spurs. To be honest I never thought of him as a Tottenham manager. He’s not open enough for them, but they were getting it together (at Spurs). They had a good system of play, and I don’t think they’ve got that at the moment, so I want to be in the Arsenal dressing room!’

Mourinho ended his Spurs career having won 45 of his 86 matches in a year and a half at the club. The 58-year-old is now working at AS Roma in Serie A with the Italian club currently fourth in the league.
With the North London outfit not off to the best start under new coach Nuno Espirito Santo, it remains to be seen if Levy made the right decision by sacking the two-time Champions League winner earlier this year.
