Tottenham and Newcastlke fail to reach common ground on Dele Alli.

Gary Neville feels Tottenham Hotspur ace Dele Alli needs to understand his role better on the pitch

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Mirror), former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has provided Tottenham Hotspur ace, Dele Alli, with some advice on how to regain some of his earlier form after a poor performance against Arsenal.

The white half of North London was not all pleased when the whistle blew after 90 minutes against Arsenal as they were defeated 3-1 on the night. However, one player who only featured in the first half was Dele Alli.

The Englishman was brought off at the start of the second half, with Oliver Skipp replacing him in midfield. The 25-year-old looked off the paces and rarely provided something in the attacking or defensive phase of the game.

For somebody who won the 2015/16 and 2016/17 PFA Young Player of the Year award, things have surely taken a turn for the worse since then. Gary Neville advised the player after the game on how he needs to understand his role better and not act like a deep-lying central midfielder. He told Sky Sports (h/t Mirror):

“He’s got to simplify his game he was an instinctive player that realised his job was to get in the box in every attack, to get into the box, make that run from a deeper position, from off Harry Kane or past him when they didn’t have the ball.

“He’s now basically getting involved in the build-up, thinking he’s a player and he’s not a player, he’s not a Thiago or Bruno Fernandes or Jorginho, he’s not that type of player don’t get too involved in the build-up.”

Alli has so far scored a single goal in six Premier League games this season, and things might have to change on the 25-year-old’s part if he hopes to feature under Nuno week-in and week-out.
