Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Graham Potter refused the hot-seat at Tottenham Hotspur this summer due to Daniel Levy

According to The Telegraph (h/t Express), Brighton manager Graham Potter did not want the managerial job at Tottenham Hotspur this summer due to chairman Daniel Levy.

Spurs hired Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this summer, but he was by no means their first choice for the job. Jose Mourinho had a half-decent season at the North London outfit, and the only way to progress was upwards.

Thus, the club had targeted the likes of Gennaro Gattuso, Paulo Fonseca, Mauricio Pochettino, and even Antonio Conte, who had recently lifted the Serie A title with Inter Milan. Another name on the list was also Brighton manager Graham Potter.

The English manager joined Brighton back in 2019 after good stints at Swedish club Ostersunds FK and Championship outfit Swansea City. In his two seasons at the Amex Stadium, Potter achieved finishes in the bottom half of the table, mildly avoiding relegation.

However, the 46-year-old’s brand of football was attractive. Thus, Spurs approached him, but the young manager had no interest in accepting the offer. The key reason behind this rejection was that he did not want to tarnish his reputation by working under Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, according to The Telegraph (h/t The Express).

Not that there have ever been any bust-ups between Levy and former managers but the English chairman has a supposed reputation of being a ‘tough negotiator’ in the transfer market. Although this has changed slightly under new director of football Fabio Paratici, Potter did not want anything to do with the job.
