Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson urges Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho to join Tottenham Hotspur

In conversation with bettingodds365.com (h/t Mirror), former wing-back Glen Johnson has urged Philippe Coutinho to join Tottenham Hotspur amongst links of an exit from Barcelona.

Barcelona have been coming under the heat recently as the club has been going through a financially tough period. Their performances on the field have been equally torrid as they sit at the bottom of their UEFA Champions League group and are currently 9th on the La Liga table.

The club had to let go of some of its big names as Lionel Messi and Antonie Greizman headed out of the Camp Nou. Other experienced players like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Gerard Pique were forced to take major wage cuts to reduce the financial burdens on the Catalan giants.

With all of this happening the 29-year-old Brazilian international has been linked with a move away from the Spanish club. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been identified as the two major clubs that have been interested in signing the playmaker recently.

The former English international made his thoughts known about the Brazilian’s current situation:

“He’s linked with the two big north London clubs, and if he was to go to one of them, then I’d say Tottenham if I’m being honest. Philippe [Coutinho] knows that he’s not in a great position at the moment, and if he was to go to an Arsenal side who are struggling, then that could affect him even more.”

Arsenal have already signed a new No 10 in Martin Ødegaard this summer but the Lilywhites could fancy a move for the ex-Liverpool midfielder who took the PL by storm when he played for the Reds. The former Inter Milan player scored 41 goals and provided 35 assists for the Merseysiders in 152 Premier League appearances.

Could Philippe Coutinho move to Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur?

Spurs can use a dynamic personality in the middle of the pitch who could help create a bunch of goal-scoring opportunities for the team. He could be also a great creative outlet to combine with Son Heung-min down the wings.

Any move for the 29-year-old would certainly get the fans excited and Nuno Espirito Santo can benefit with the potential addition of a creative attacking player in his ranks if Spurs are to compete at the top consistently.
