Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon called on referee Andre Marriner to pause the game so that a fan can get critical medical attention

An alert Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon drew the attention of the referee, Andre Marriner, to the stands where a fan was in need of immediate medical attention.

The incident occurred in Spurs’ 3-2 win over Newcastle United at St James Park. The atmosphere in the stadium turned sombre in the 40th minute after a fan in the East End stand went down in need of CPR.

Magpies doctor Paul Catterson responded well to the call and was on hand with a defibrillator to tend to the fan. The play was briefly suspended before Son Heung-min extended the visitors’ lead to 3-1 on the night.

Sergio Reguilon did well to react to the incident asap.

According to Sky Sports (h/t The Metro), speaking after the game, Reguilon revealed what he saw in the stands. The Spaniard’s revelation is enough to stun anyone into taking action.

“I saw one guy lying down and one man was doing like this (chest compressions). I was very nervous.”

He admits he rushed over to the referee after witnessing the incident and the officials responded immediately. Credit has to be given to not just Reguilon for calling attention to the issue but also the officials and the club doctors who responded immediately.

“I went to the referee and said, “Referee, look at this. We cannot play with this. Stop the match.”

Reguilon goes on to further add that it was more important to ensure that the fan’s health took precedence over the match. Thankfully every part of the mechanism performed its duty on the night.

“Now, I think he’s okay right? That’s more important than everything.”

Not only is the Spaniard a reliable defender on the field but also a responsible citizen off it.
