Nuno Espirito Santo reveals why Tottenham Hotspur could not create in defeat to West Ham United
Speaking after the game (h/t football.london), Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed that West Ham United’s defending in the box made it hard for Tottenham Hotspur to create chances.
Spurs suffered their fourth defeat of the season and unfortunately for Nuno, it was yet another London derby. The Portuguese boss has succumbed to defeats against Arsenal, Crystal Palace, and Chelsea this season, and the loss against West Ham would have hit hard.
However, one area where the North London outfit were lacking on the day was their creativity. Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura could not find the telling pass, while Tanguy Ndombele was rarely seen busting a breath to create.
Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon also suffered in the wide areas as they could not find the space to cross in the box, and even when they did, Harry Kane was surrounded by at least three men.
Nuno has now revealed why it was hard to break down the East London outfit on the day and what his side could have done better in the final third. He told reporters after the game (h/t football.london):
“Because West Ham defend in the box with a lot of men. Not much space. Should’ve moved the ball faster and go to wide areas. Always difficult when all men behind the ball, difficult to find spaces and gaps.”

The situation got so dire sometimes that Kane had to fall back till the half-line and find runners beyond him. However, their need for creativity has been a constant issue this season, evident by the fact that they have not won a game by a margin of more than one goal till now.
Something will need to change soon as they now gear up to face Burnley in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night before facing Manchester United in the league.
