Tottenham Hotspur fans react as Steven Bergwijn helps Netherlands defeat Norway and seal qualification to the 2022 World Cup
According to the official Twitter account of Tottenham Hotspur, Steven Bergwijn helped the Netherlands seal qualification to the 2022 World Cup after defeating Norway 2-0.
The Oranje failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and it was a huge embarrassment for them. After all, it was a country that had reached the final in 2010 and the semi-final in 2014.
However, after sound management by Ronald Koeman and Louis van Gaal over the last half a decade, they have sealed automatic qualification for the 2022 World Cup.
Moreover, a victory was important on the night. A draw or a loss would have seen Turkey qualify instead. The Netherlands dominated most of the game but could only create half-chances.
Memphis Depay threatened the goal at times but to no avail. Norway looked completely helpless as they did not have star striker Erling Haaland available for selection. There was far more enthusiasm in the second half from the men in orange. And Steven Bergwijn looked like the man who was going to make the difference.
The Tottenham ace was found by Depay in an open era on the right flank after just over 80 minutes, and he slammed the ball into the roof of the net. Norway then won a corner in added time, but it was defended well and the Oranje led a counter-attack.
Bergwijn was the man on the run again and set up Depay to seal qualification to the 2022 World Cup. The winger has not featured in any of the two games under Antonio Conte yet and the Italian would have taken notice of this performance ahead of their game against Leeds United on the weekend.
Let us now see how some fans reacted on Twitter after Bergwijn ensured the Netherlands a place at next year’s World Cup.
