Transfer News: Newcastle United taking interest in Stefan de Vrij can deter Tottenham Hotspur in Milan Skriniar pursuit
According to The Times (Subscription Required) [h/t Express], the pursuit of Stefan de Vrij by Newcastle United could hinder Tottenham Hotspur’s January transfer plans for his Inter Milan teammate, Milan Skriniar.
Antonio Conte has made his way to Tottenham Hotspur and would be looking to instil his brand of football as soon as possible with the club. The 26-year-old Slovakia international has been linked with Spurs in the past. He has played under the Italian manager and could also help provide some composure to the Lilwyhites backline.
It is now believed that the Magpies are interested in securing fellow Inter Milan defender de Vrij. Both of these players have become an integral part of the Nerazzurri. They form an important duo at the back and the Italian club may understandably not want to lose both of their main central defenders in the same transfer window.
Newcastle United have just been acquired by whose net worth is estimated to be £320billion. The Toons are currently languishing in the relegation zone of the PL table and the new owners would be wanting to bring in some big names in January to prevent them from getting relegated.
The Tyneside-based club’s pursuit of the 29-year-old Dutch professional footballer could thus be more warranted than ever. On the other hand, Conte has been handed a fresh injury scare as Cristian Romero sustained a thigh injury while playing for Argentina against Brazil in their latest FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The former Chelsea manager likes to play with a three-man defence. Romero was starting to become a key player in the central defensive partnership along with Eric Dier recently. While this may be a big blow Conte would have to look at suitable replacements such as Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga or even Ben Davies.

The injury to the 23-year-old Argentine means that the 52-year-old manager may be even more tempted to add a suitable replacement in that position to help shore things up. With Newcastle being linked to Stefan de Vrij, their pursuit of Milan Skriniar may be even tougher than fans would have actually thought it would be.
Newcastle’s takeover will challenge the teams in the big 6 and Spurs, trophyless since 2008, should be on guard to protect their status as a footballing giant in England. If it does come down to a transfer battle between us and the Toons for an Inter defender, Daniel Levy and co must make sure that the Lilywhites somehow come away as the winners. That, however, is a thing we should leave for the future as the links seem tentative as best as of now.
