Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur to send Dilan Markanday on loan in January amidst talks of a new contract

According to Football Insider (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur have decided to send academy starlet Dilan Markanday out on loan in the January transfer window. He has emerged to become a highly-rated prospect at the youth level after taking his performances to another level.

Markanday has a contract with Spurs until the end of the 2021-22 season, after which he will become a free agent if an extension is not signed. However, a new contract could be on the way where he can extend his stay at the club.

The 20-year-old has made 17 appearances this season and has scored 11 goals alongside seven assists for the U23 side. His displays have earned him the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for October. Markanday was also in the running for the award in April and August of this year, showing how much of an improvement he has made.

However, the youngster could face a new challenge in his career with a jump up to the senior level. Tottenham have taken a stance where they are ready for the player to take the next step in his development and are looking to send him out on loan.

Good decision?

While we all would love to see him get a chance for the first team, he is better off continuing to earn regular game time. If he gets promoted to the main squad, he might get some minutes here and there, but it is far more likely for him to get regular starts if he is sent out on a temporary spell elsewhere.

However, we must find the right place for him as it would shape how he develops moving forward. There is no point in sending him out to a team where he warms the bench or doesn’t fit into that particular manager’s set-up.

It would also be a big step up from the U-23 level to the senior set-up and the attacking midfielder should be wary of that. However, looking at how he fared so far, it seems like this is the right time.

The British-Asian is one of our valuable academy prospects and we should look to develop more youngsters like him to assist us in the future. He could be next in line to take the mantle from our starters by the time they fall into the latter stages of their career.

As for his contract situation, it is imperative that he has tied down to a new deal before being sent out, otherwise by the time he returns from his loan spell- if he is sent out on one, to begin with- then he would be a free agent by the time he comes back next summer.
