Report: Brighton vs Tottenham Hotspur postponed due to Covid outbreak at Spurs
According to the official website of the Premier League, the match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur has been postponed due to a Covid outbreak at the Spurs training ground. The game would have taken place on Sunday 12 December under normal conditions.
Tottenham were hit with a spread of coronavirus within the squad which has already seen the UEFA Europa Conference League fixture against Stade Rennes get postponed. It will be the second consecutive match that has gotten rescheduled due to the situation that is unfolding at N17.
The first team facilities at Hotspur Way Training Ground were shut down after Premier League and UK Health Security Agency advised them to do so. The league decided to postpone the match at the request of the North London club as several staff members and players were affected by the virus.
“Brighton & Hove Albion’s home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, due to be played on Sunday 12 December at 14:00 GMT, has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting this afternoon.”
“The Premier League Board has taken the decision to postpone the game following guidance from medical advisers, with the health of players and staff the priority. The postponed fixture will be rescheduled in due course and the Premier League wishes a quick recovery to those with COVID-19.”
Wise move
It is good to see that the league took into consideration the health risk associated if the match was allowed to go ahead. The spread needs to be stopped through constant monitoring and testing, and the conducting of fixtures would not have allowed for a safe environment.
Leicester City were also affected heavily by the strain, which has seen some players remain at home for their UEFA Europa League clash. Premier League also asked the clubs to return to the measures used earlier this year when Covid was adverse.

The decision was made in line with the new rules issued by the UK government to reduce the spread of Omicron, a new strain of Covid coronavirus. Fans are also asked to have mandatory proof of their vaccination certificates when they attend sporting events with more than 10,000 people.
It would be tough to see football return to how it was early this year, but safety should always be the priority. We can only hope that the situation is under control and a solution is found as soon as possible.
