Tension between Antonio Conte and Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham Hotspur amidst Ajax interest
According to ESPN, there is tension between Antonio Conte and Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham Hotspur amidst interest from Ajax. The latter is yet to start a game since the former has taken over the managerial role at N17.
Bergwijn has played just 11 matches this season and has just one assist to his name. He has made two substitute appearances under Conte, but the minutes are meager. He missed some games for Tottenham, having suffered an ankle injury during the international break. The attacker could have started in the loss against NS Mura under the Spurs boss but picked up an illness ahead of the game.
Last week, the Italian acknowledged that the 24-year-old could play as an understudy to Harry Kane. He added how a further assessment would be made, which could probably be to conclude whether the winger has a future moving forward or not.
However, the 52-year-old manager is doubtful about the Dutchman’s abilities, resulting in a strained relationship between them. Interestingly enough, The Amsterdam club is eyeing the forward in the January transfer window.
Erik ten Hag’s side is open to taking him on loan or even a permanent transfer in January. Should this be true, his signing would be one of the poorest acquisitions we have made in recent years. The blame cannot be put entirely on the Dutch forward as he had impressed at PSV Eindhoven and has done the same for his country during his time in England.
Final nail in the coffin?
Conte has also apparently asked the North London club for one more month to complete his evaluation of the current squad. Bergwijn, since coming in from PSV, has failed to nail down a starting position on either wing. 18 of his total 42 league appearances have come from the bench while he has only played the full 90 minutes in four of those matches.

We brought him in for a modest £27m transfer fee on a contract that runs until 2025. He is still young and a lethal option on the flank. If the Italian manager is to reach a verdict that Bergwijn does not fit his plans, we must make sure we are compensated financially in a proper manner.
Whatever the case it may be, the best advice would be not to jump the gun and wait until the transfer window actually opens. That is especially the case due to the recent Covid outbreak within the squad which has seen training close down indefinitely, with all other matters having taken a backseat at the club for now.
