Teddy Sheringham warns Tottenham Hotspur on fixture congestion and hands Conte PL objective
Tottenham Hotspur face potential fixture congestion due to a Covid outbreak, which has seen Spurs legend Teddy Sheringham issue a warning about it while handing Antonio Conte the Premier League season objective.
Conte has come in and has done a great job so far, but the virus spread happened at the worst time for him. Improvements were noticeable in recent games, and the outbreak has forced the club to shut down the first-team training ground. That raises concerns that the fitness levels would worsen due to the lack of training sessions.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football.London, in association with 978bet, Sheringham cautions the North London club about the postponement of these fixtures and has conveyed his objective for the league this term.
“If you cancel those two games [Rennes and Brighton] then you’re getting fixture pile-ups,” he explained. “It’s already tough enough at Christmas anyway. I don’t know when they are going to fit those games in, if they’re going to now. Who knows what’s going to happen?”
“I think Tottenham will have more chance at getting fourth place rather than Manchester United.”
Sheringham believes that Spurs have a better chance than Manchester United to finish in the top four. While it is certainly doable, the task will not be easy. Establishing ourselves as a Champions League club once again is the way to go.
Alarming situation
The objective would have made sense in normal conditions but, the recent setback has raised concerns about our ability to tackle the situation. We are not blessed with a depth full of quality which, got highlighted in the defeat to NS Mura in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

There are other issues like fatigue and whether we would have enough time between fixtures once we get a rescheduled date. Not to mention, the players and the staff members who got tested positive are out indefinitely until a full recovery takes place.
Match sharpness is another problem that adds to the long list of things that are against us currently. Some of them could be solvable through personal training schedules at home but, it would not replicate what the players learn and gain during sessions.

With matches against Leicester City and Liverpool are on the horizon, all we can do is hope for the best. If any of those do get postponed like the others, it will create issues for us in the future. The Italian boss already has enough problems to deal with within the team, and the extra issue will only stack the odds against him.
Time will tell whether we would get through this unscathed, or it could adversely impact our ambitions for the season.
