Journo claims out-of-favour Tottenham trio could leave in January

Tottenham and Newcastlke fail to reach common ground on Dele Alli.

Tottenham Hotspur could sell Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Steven Bergwijn in January transfer window

According to transfer guru Nicolo Schira (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur could sell the trio of Dele AlliTanguy Ndombele and Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window. They have failed in expressing their quality at Spurs in recent years and as a result, have fallen down the pecking order at N17.

Alli has been on a downward trend since the last days of Mauricio Pochettino and has lost the early magic he displayed at the start of his senior career. Ndombele was signed from Lyon for a club-record fee of £53.8million but has not met the expectations that come along with such a fee.

Bergwijn, who cost £27million in transfer fees, has similarly failed to catch the eye with his performances. The Tottenham trio has had a clean slate under Antonio Conte but so far, has failed to impress the manager when given chances. As a result, they are not really in the picture for a regular place in the starting XI.

Tottenham to sell Alli, Ndombele and Bergwijn in January transfer window?
Ndombele’s time is up at Tottenham?

Let them go?

It is unfortunate how things have turned out, but we cannot live in the past for too long. They have the quality to excel at the top but have not shown so when needed in recent times. The Frenchman has shown flashes of brilliance since his move, but without consistency, it’s of little use.

Those who watched him in Spurs colours would also notice how, towards the end of some games, he is not the most enthusiastic worker off the ball. The Dutch forward, on the other hand, impressed when he was out on international duty but never showed that form consistently in the North London club’s jersey.

The England international had many chances under different managers to find his early promise but failed in doing so. Perhaps, the embarrassing loss to NS Mura in the UEFA Europa Conference League was the final nail in the coffin for the midfield duo. Last week, it was claimed by ESPN that there was some tension between the 52-year-old manager and Bergwijn, which adds to the current development.

The recent Covid-19 outbreak at the club has made such matters less important for now. Moreover, it has put Conte’s training plans on hold for a while and for the fringe players, has taken away valuable sessions where they can prove their worth to Conte before January arrives.

But with the winter transfer window drawing close, it could force the hand of the club and the coach to decide on their future. The three names mentioned above aren’t average players. They have proven their quality to be in the senior squad of a club like Spurs.

And if we are to part ways with them, it is imperative that we are financially compensated in a way our club would think is fair, and that the club does so with replacements in mind- whether they are already within the squad or would need to be brought in from the transfer market.
