Spurs Transfer News: Barcelona offer Tottenham Hotspur chance to sign Philippe Coutinho in January window
According to The Mirror [Print Edition] via Spurs-Web (h/t Football.London), Barcelona have offered Tottenham Hotspur the chance to sign Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window. He has failed to recapture the magic he had shown during his days at Liverpool since moving to Camp Nou.
Barca want to raise funds for signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City and have decided to offload Coutinho. As a result, they have given Tottenham a chance to sign the Brazilian in the winter transfer window.
Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici would need to discuss with Antonio Conte whether the 29-year-old would suit the team. We do have to keep in mind how he had fared with the Catalans and Bayern Munich when he was on loan.
High Risk Signing?
The potential signing of the Brazil international would be associated with a high-risk factor. Should we go down that route, proper care and assessment must be made before jumping the gun.
Coutinho would be an added name on our wage bill. He was a star at Liverpool but has clearly failed to replicate those levels at Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Even during his heyday, he wasn’t the most consistent playmaker around and has since had issues with injury. Those who have followed his careers would largely agree with this assessment.
Any potential signing may also depend on how our midfielders would fare in the next few matches. The fringe players played a great game against Liverpool, which has breathed new life into their chances of staying at N17. Conte has decided that Dele Alli would be allowed to have time until the end of the season to make a case for himself.
Tanguy Ndombele could end up building on the performance he showed against the Reds whereas Giovani Lo Celso could work on the promise he displayed before getting injured in the international break. But that won’t matter if Conte plans to play Coutinho in a similar role we see Son, Lucas Moura, or Steven Bergwijn in.
If we do sanction a deal for him, the Italian coach will have a tough job at hand in trying to recapture the Barca star’s mojo. On the other hand, he does have the ability to make something happen out of nothing.

An able dribbler on the ball, Coutinho is also capable of playing in attacking midfield and on either flank of the pitch. So, as we mentioned before, a careful assessment of the pros and cons should be taken if we want a player like the Brazilian international at Tottenham.
