Antonio Conte: It is difficult for Tottenham Hotspur to win the Carabao Cup
Antonio Conte has admitted that it would be very difficult for Tottenham Hotspur to win the Carabao Cup following the victory against West Ham United in the quarter final. His team beat the Hammers by a 2-1 scoreline that saw them qualify for the semi-finals.
Tottenham controlled the match in general, but clear cut chances were fewer in number throughout the game. David Moyes’ side had more of the ball, but Spurs did well to hold on to the lead and with little trouble. Goals from Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura gave them the win while Jarrod Bowen scored for West Ham.
Speaking in the post-match presser (h/t Daily Mail Online), Conte assessed that it would be challenging for them to go all the way in the competition. He pointed out the level of competition that the team would have to face in order to attain silverware.
“It’s good for Tottenham to reach the semi-finals of this competition. You can see the names of these teams that have reached the semi-finals – Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal with us – so every side wants to try to lift this trophy. We have had to beat an important team like West Ham and they eliminated [Manchester] United and [Manchester] City. In England it’s very difficult to win something.”
Honest but true assessment
The North London club will face Chelsea in the semi-finals of the League Cup in a two-legged tie on the 3rd and 10th of January, 2022. Thomas Tuchel’s side have looked wobbly in recent weeks but will still represent a formidable challenge.
While it would be challenging for us to win, it is not impossible. The two-legged tie makes it difficult as we have to be consistent across two games. Given the recent run of form, it would be foolhardy to dismiss our chances.
We have won our recent games by facing different types of in-game scenarios and it shows the level of improvement under Conte. We even excelled in an end-to-end battle against one of the title favourites, Liverpool.

The match against the Hammers showed how we controlled the game without having possession. The above reasons indicate that we are ready to face all kinds of obstacles which is a good boost to have while challenging for silverware. We are not perfect but are on the right track of building a great project under Conte.
