Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie
According to the Italian news outlet Calciomercato via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie amidst competition from other clubs.
Kessie has attracted the attention of the top clubs from across Europe thanks to his impressive run of performances. A dynamic presence in the middle of the park, it comes as no surprise that Spurs are interested in his services.
Our arch-rivals, Arsenal are also one of the interested parties. However, Spurs lead their North London rivals in the race to land the Ivory Coast international.
The 25-year-old will see his current contract at the San Siro expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. He is eligible to talk to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement from January 1 next month.
The situation presents Spurs with a stellar opportunity to land one of Serie A’s best players for nothing. The North Londoners’ do need an addition or two in the middle of the park and adding Kessie on a Bosman transfer will free up funds that can be used elsewhere.
Necessary option?
Any potential move for the Ivory Coast international would depend on whether Antonio Conte gives his approval or not. Conte already has options in the base of the midfield, with players like Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg impressing of late.
Harry Winks has also started to make a mark at N17, giving the Spurs manager another factor to consider. That does not mean that we do not have any space for the arrival of the Milan star if he is keen to join us.
Skipp and Hiobjerg are both capable of playing the advanced role in midfield. Kessie too can do the same and his addition will give Conte three very versatile players to choose from in the middle of the park.
The 52-year-old boss deployed a three-man midfield against Liverpool in the Premier League recently. Having Kessie in the mix will give Conte more options among players who can cut it at the top level.
The ability of our midfielders to perform dual roles when needed opens up a world of possibilities. It also enhances our strength in depth

Having dependable players to call upon will be a major boost for Tottenham’s ambitions. With us set to compete along multiple fronts, it is imperative that we have players who can not just step up when needed but are also ready to go when needed.
Kessie’s performances for Milan this season have failed to match the gravitas of the campaign gone by. However, he provided an excellent reminder of his abilities by scoring twice against Empoli earlier this week. Spurs could provide him with a new challenge and the opportunity to be a part of an exciting new project.
