Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur target return for Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier amidst Manchester United interest
According to 90Min (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur are targeting a return for Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier amidst interest from Manchester United. Having left the club back in 2019, he has enjoyed a successful spell in Spain.
Atletico have taken a stance that any interested party would have to activate the release clause worth £50million. That has resulted in hesitation among the interested clubs as the financial risk involved is too high.
A total of nine Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on the 31-year-old, and Newcastle United are one of them. Tottenham will face high competition for his services if they hope to bring back their former player.
We need him?
Spurs are looking into the January transfer window to bring in reinforcements to boost the squad. An attacking right-back is one of the desired targets, and Trippier would fit into that requirement.
The Englishman could also provide good competition to Emerson Royal, who is adapting to the new league. Since the former is slowly approaching the twilight of his career, he would not take away Royal’s chances of becoming a success at N17.
Matt Doherty has been disappointing since his transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers but he did have a decent performance against West Ham United recently. While it is just one display, he could get more opportunities moving forward because of it. It remains to be seen whether there would be any changes in the club’s targets if Doherty claws his way back into the team.
The Atleti fullback would be a smart addition looking at how he has fared at Wanda Metropolitano. Playing under Diego Simeone would have helped him to become tactically astute, turning him into a better player.

However, if the La Liga side does not budge in their decision, it wouldn’t be the smartest decision to meet Trippier’s apparent release clause in its entirety. If the club does want to sign a new right-back, it would be obvious that they are not happy with the quality of the players in the squad at the moment.
Because in Emerson, Doherty, and Japhet Tanganga, we have three players that can play down the right side of the defence. Trippier, having played at Spurs and impressing in the PL before in his career, could be the man to satisfy our team’s needs if they want an astute full-back who knows his way around the opposition’s final third on the pitch.
