Transfer News: Antonio Conte confident about keeping Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur despite contract expiry
According to Evening Standard, Antonio Conte thinks Tottenham Hotspur won’t have any problems convincing Hugo Lloris to sign a new contract.
Hugo Lloris has been a loyal servant for Tottenham over the last decade. The French captain is currently in his 9th year at the club, and in these years, he has developed himself into a world-class goalkeeper. The 34-year-old continues to make a difference at N17. This season, the veteran shot-stopper has appeared in 17 matches for Spurs across all competitions.
Hugo Lloris’ current contract will end in the summer of 2022, and Tottenham have already started talks with the veteran ‘keeper two weeks ago. But until now, no conclusion has emerged and that is bound to raise some concerns among the fans.
Antonio Conte lauded Hugo Lloris for being a leader in the dressing room and suggested that the Tottenham captain certainly knows about the affection from the club’s side.
“Hugo is our captain, he is a player that played for Tottenham for many years, and we are all happy to have him in our team, in the squad and in the dressing room. For sure, he is a point of reference for the other players, and Hugo knows very well what I think about him and what the club thinks about him.”
The Italian manager didn’t provide any update on the transfer talks between the 34-year-old shot-stopper and the Spurs board but suggested that convincing Hugo Lloris would never become a massive problem for the board.
“Now we’ll see, but I think Hugo won’t be ever a problem for Tottenham.”
Lloris has proved his efficiency in France’s World Cup-winning campaign and remains a vital player for both the dressing rooms. Even though he has been giving sustained performances, the former Olympique Lyon player isn’t getting any younger. A viable question emerges; how long can he keep going in the Premier League?
Finding a viable alternative to take his place looks like a smart option at this moment, keeping the long-term picture in mind. What the new contract would do is buy us some time before we can think of what we plan on doing once Lloris is displaced from his position as Tottenham’s number one.

Pierluigi Gollini came on a loan deal in the summer while Joe Hart, Paulo Gazzaniga, and Michel Vorm are just some of the talented goalkeepers that have left Spurs in the past few years. If Lloris is to go, it is only logical to want a replacement for him. But listening to Conte’s words regarding Lloris’ renewal, it seems we can keep trusting the Frenchman for a little while longer.
