Sevilla eye Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn as an alternative to Anthony Martial
According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Sun), Sevilla are ready to target Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn if Manchester United does not change their stance on Anthony Martial. The Spurs star has had a mixed time at N17 but has shown some promise in recent games.
Martial had expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford through his agent and Man United were willing to listen to offers for him in January. The La Liga club had their proposal rejected as they were ready to pay only a part of his wages without forking out any loan fee either.
The Red Devils want the interested parties to pay the entire wages while receiving some fee for the loan transfer. The Spanish side have “very little room” to manoeuvre around the financial restrictions and could be prepared to end their interest in the Frenchman. As a result, they are ready to enquire about the availability of Bergwijn in the winter transfer window.
Bergwijn to Sevilla?
Any interest in the Dutchman would depend on how the situation develops between the Manchester club and Julen Lopetegui’s side. So we have to wait and see if an agreement can be reached between them or not.
If the above statement is to be believed, then we could see a decision made in the coming days as the two parties are far apart in their viewpoints. We have had previous dealings with the Sevillistas, such as the swap plus cash deal involving Bryan Gil and Erik Lamela.
It is tough to see us facilitating a move looking at our limited attacking options and how the 24-year-old has fared well in the recent matches. It would not make sense for Antonio Conte to give his approval for a move without a replacement being lined up.

The season is still long, and we have a lot of matches coming up that would ask the usage of the whole squad. Not to mention we have fixtures that got postponed due to the Covid situation, which further adds to the congestion.

Conte is in a position where he cannot afford to rest the trio of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura. Gil is still adapting to Premier League and cannot be fully counted on currently.
All these add to the list of reasons why a transfer would not happen next month. It remains to be seen whether there would be an enquiry from Spain and if there is then the club would entertain it or not.
