Antonio Conte unimpressed by the performance of Tottenham Hotspur against Morecambe
According to Tottenham’s official website, Antonio Conte has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur ‘struggled’ against League One side Morecambe.
Tottenham Hotspur lost the 1st leg of the Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea earlier this month. The Italian manager ruthlessly assessed that game and exposed that Spurs operated like a ‘middle team.’
The North London side’s players had three days’ rest in between to evaluate their performance and bounce back. However, the team still failed to match Conte’s standards yesterday.
Tottenham won by a healthy margin of 3-1 thanks to goals from senior stars Lucas Moura, Harry Kane and Harry Winks. However, all three goals came in 14 minutes of the second half. We were largely disappointing in the first 45 minutes and started poorly- a pattern that is beginning to repeat itself far too often for our liking.
In an interview with N17 Live, Antonio Conte suggested that his side failed to create scoring opportunities in the first half and how Morecambe were defending their 1 goal lead for large parts of the game.
“I think for a big part of the game, we struggled. In this type of game, you have to score because if you don’t score, you can find during the game a block of players trying to defend the result.”
Tottenham defenders couldn’t hold their ground during a Morecambe corner kick and gave away an easy goal in the 33rd minute. Antonio Conte expected his team to deal with such situations more efficiently.
“Then, it can happen through a set-piece to concede a goal. That happened today. We can do much better.”
The Italian manager suggested that Tottenham have to assess their performance and improve their game. The former Inter Milan manager also revealed that the hectic schedule has become difficult to deal with- something which is only going to worsen courtesy of the postponed games in December.
“We are having a tough period, a busy period, seven games in 20 days. I know very well that when you have such a busy period, it’s not easy.”
Yesterday’s display is a classic example of the lack of depth in our squad. Antonio Conte started Japhet Tanganga, Joe Rodon, Matt Doherty, and Tanguy Ndombélé yesterday. These players haven’t played much football this season, which could explain their largely forgettable displays yesterday.
Conte also suggested how injuries to Giovani Lo Celso affected the creative approach of the midfield. Regardless of the Argentine missing from their squad, we have enough in our tank to see off sides like Morecambe without having to burden the likes of Kane and Moura.

We saved our blushes against the minnows but PL teams would be way more ruthless. We cannot expect to count on our bouncebackability during games and should start strong by scoring a few goals ourselves, rather than finding ourselves playing catch-up.
