Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte gives contract update on Spurs captain Hugo Lloris
Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has provided an update on the contract situation of captain Hugo Lloris. He spoke on the matter ahead of their clash with Chelsea in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
The Frenchman will see his current deal with Tottenham expire at the end of this campaign. The skipper could reach a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs this month if he decides to move elsewhere. As a result, uncertainty has surrounded his future at N17.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Football.London), Conte revealed that the club and Lloris are currently engaged in negotiations over an extension. The coach added that he has full confidence that an agreement can be reached in the coming days.
“I think so, I think that they have started to talk. For me he is an important player and I’m sure that they are going to find a solution for him to continue to play with Tottenham. I think and I repeat because I am not the person that speaks to renew the contract with the players. There is the club and the people that do this, but for sure I am very confident about this situation to be positive.”
Huge boost for Spurs
There is a sentiment that both parties are eager to renew the current deal, which is great news for us. The 35-year-old continues to perform consistently for the team between the posts, showing time and again that he is truly one of the best goalkeepers in England.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has made crucial saves for us time and time again this season and has continued his good form under Antonio Conte. We are not in a position where we can afford to lose his services and an extension would benefit us greatly moving forward.
Pierluigi Gollini has not shown any signs that he could fill the gap left by the France international if the latter ends up leaving us in the future. Moreover, we signed the Italian goalkeeper on loan from Atalanta last summer and his long-term future here is uncertain for that reason.

It doesn’t matter how long the extension is for. It should just be long enough to buy us time for sorting out the right replacement between the sticks. He is also one of the most senior players in our squad who has a strong voice in the dressing room, and his leadership skills are just an added bonus on top of his goalkeeping skills.
