Transfer News: Newcastle United have ‘opened talks’ with Tottenham Hotspur for Dele Alli

According to Football Insider (h/t ESPN), Newcastle United have started negotiating with Tottenham Hotspur on a transfer move for midfielder Dele Alli.

After a disappointing display during the last season, Dele Alli hasn’t been able to pick up his form in this campaign as well. After a few matches at the start of the term, it was clear that he would struggle to find playing time under Nuno Espírito Santo.

New manager Antonio Conte gave him a chance to prove his worth in a crunch clash against Liverpool. However, the English star’s performance that day summed up his form at the club in recent seasons- active in the final third but too many missed opportunities.

With only 18 matches in this term, it is becoming clear that the 25-year-old wouldn’t get many opportunities to showcase his talent if he stays at the North London club. Conte clearly places his faith in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks, and Giovani Lo Celso in midfield.

Alli to Newcastle?

Newcastle United are currently eyeing to free him from his misery by making him an essential player of their squad. Even though Eddie Howe’s team targeted Jesse Lingard previously, an agreement is yet to materialize with Manchester United. And now, the Magpies have started ‘preliminary talks’ with Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of the 25-year-old star.

Dele has already fallen down the pecking order and currently doesn’t seem to be a big part of our first-team set-up. On the other hand, we do not have a plethora of attacking midfielders and with Tanguy Ndombele’s career at Spurs in danger of ending prematurely, we would be wise to either keep Alli for the depth, or eye a new face as a replacement if he does go out.

Currently, Newcastle United provide us with an excellent opportunity to generate considerable funds by offloading a player who is not one of the regular names on our team sheet.

But it remains to be seen if the Tottenham star would want to move to a club that could be relegated at the end of this season. After all, it is a factor that is also influencing Lingard’s decision to move to Tyneside on a permanent basis.

Many teams would not be interested in giving away their players in the middle of the season. But if we really are keen to offload the player this month itself, Newcastle’s interest can mean that we receive some sort of financial compensation for a player who is earning £100,000-a-week without contributing a lot to the team.
