Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur target Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos amidst Newcastle United interest
According to transfer news on Football Insider (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur are in talks to sign Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos amidst interest from Newcastle United. He has been a crucial presence in the backline for his side and even contributed to their title-winning run in the 2019/20 Europa League season.
Newcastle are strong competitors but they have not yet reached common ground with the La Liga club over a potential transfer. Discussions over a €45million move are being held at the moment. However, there have been no indications of how close the Toons are to an agreement.
Tottenham are only engaged in preliminary talks with the Spanish giants over a potential transfer. The English side is open to including Giovani Lo Celso to reduce the overall fee, although there has been no information on whether that attempt would be accepted or not.
Good target?
The 28-year-old is a solid option for our backline when partnered with the right profile of players surrounding him. We could also use some addition in the centre of the defence as Japhet Tanganga is struggling to make himself a regular in Antonio Conte’s side while Joe Rodon is seeing next to no starts for us.
It would be challenging to convince Julen Lopetegui’s side, considering how they are engaged in a La Liga title race with Real Madrid. Not to mention, we are further put into trouble by the interest from the Magpies, who would certainly be desperate for quality additions in an attempt to survive relegation this season.
The asking price is no peanuts as well, even for a club our size. We are still in talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers over a £20million deal for Adama Traore, so it remains to be seen what our transfer strategy is for this month.
And hence, it is understandable why we are open to offloading Lo Celso. The team has been doing fairly well without him in recent weeks and it seems that Conte has placed his trust in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, and Harry Winks for the time being.

Whether we can finalise a move or not remains to be seen in the few days that are left in the winter transfer window. With Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen leaving in back-to-back summers and Conte playing with three centre-backs at Spurs, any quality addition to the backline would be welcome.
