Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur make official bid with deadline to Porto for Luis Diaz

According to Pedro Sepulveda of SIC Noticias (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur have put in an official bid for the services of Porto winger Luis Diaz while providing a deadline alongside it. He is one of the hottest prospects in world football at the moment and would be a smart signing if they pull this off.

Diaz has a release clause worth €80million in his contract which would reduce to around €50million this summer. For that reason, Tottenham think that they can complete a cut-price deal, having offered €45million in transfer fees for his signature.

Spurs are also putting pressure on the Portuguese club by giving them just 48 hours to provide an appropriate answer to their offer. It would be an interesting couple of days to see what the reply will be as the January transfer window nears its end.

Surprising

If we decide to overlook the business- or the lack of it- done by us in the winter transfer market so far, this comes as an exciting piece of news. However, with the appropriate context of what happened so far, this apparent bid also comes as a pleasant surprise.

It is well known how we have targeted Adama Traore this month to bring him to N17. We have not yet reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers as there is a point of contention over the £20million price tag for his services.

Keeping that in mind, it is certainly a surprise to see us cough up more than twice that amount in a bid for Diaz. But if the claims are true, then the Colombian winger would certainly be a useful and timely addition to our frontline.

Son Heung-min is our only reliable option in the left-wing position, while Steven Bergwijn has mostly been used as a backup to Lucas Moura and recently, as a centre-forward by Conte in the 3-2 win against Leicester City. Bryan Gil, meanwhile, certainly looks like he will need time before he can start playing regular PL football.

With 16 goals and six assists in the bag this season from 28 appearances across all competitions, the Colombian would bring a much-needed boost to our squad. It is an added bonus that the 25-year-old knows where the goal is, and can share the goal-scoring burden up front with Son and Kane.

A prolific winger such as Diaz is certainly a smart target to pursue but fans may wonder why the club is still not seriously eyeing a partner for, or backup to Harry Kane up front. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if the club can actually pull the Luis Diaz deal off with less than a week to go in the window.
