Transfer Update: Tottenham Hotspur in contact with Fiorentina regarding Sofyan Amrabat
According to Daily Mail Online, Tottenham Hotspur have contacted Fiorentina to discuss the possibility of signing Sofyan Amrabat. The midfielder continues to shine at the African Cup of Nations but has largely had a season to forget at Fiorentina.
Spurs are desperate to make additions in midfield, considering how a trio of their main squad was left out of the matchday squad in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League. Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli were the three players who got sidelined by Antonio Conte, which puts their futures at the club in doubt.
Tottenham have expressed an interest in Amrabat and have now formally enquired with the Serie A club to set up the groundwork for a future move. With the January transfer window set to close in just a few days, it remains to be seen if a late move for the 25-year-old is in the offing.
Late push?
Fabio Paratici would need to work at breakneck speed for the remainder of this month since we have already left our transfer business too late. Spurs have not brought in one player this month despite Antonio Conte publically calling for reinforcements.
While Amrabat has had it tough at Fiorentina this season, he has done well with his national team, which would be a sigh of relief for us if we end up signing him. After all, it would be a peculiar situation if we buy underperforming players to replace those who have impressed themselves.
The central midfielder has not played much with the Italian club, so we may find it easier to prise him away this January. At the same time, they could decide to keep him to maintain strength in depth as they compete to finish in a European spot.
The 25-year-old has had a better dribble success rate compared to our midfielders since the beginning of the 2019/20 season. That is a large enough sample size to indicate that he is someone who can progress the ball well and can aid our attack significantly.

Moreover, the Moroccan is in third place in Serie A in the list of players who are proficient with their long ball accuracy. The sample size only includes players who have attempted 300 or more long passes throughout the last three seasons.
Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have fared well for us but it is not a bad idea to mix things up. Hopefully, he dons our jersey come February this year.
