Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli departs for Everton in permanent January move
According to the club’s official website, Tottenham Hotspur ace Dele Alli has completed a move to Premier League side, Everton, after the two clubs reached an agreement for the transfer on deadline day of the winter transfer window.
The Spurs man departs the club in January on a permanent move, ending a long stay with the club that saw him rise to become a young superstar and earn a call-up to the England national team.
Despite falling down the midfield pecking order in the last few seasons, Dele racked up 269 appearances in all competitions and found the back of the net 67 times for Spurs. Tottenham had initially signed him from EFL League One side MK Dons in a January move back in 2015.
With the Englishman not reaching the same heights as he did with his performances as a youngster with the club, head coach Antonio Conte has barely used him since the start of 2022. A few domestic appearances and Europa Conference League showings formed the majority of his playing time at the club this season.
Rise to fame
Dele was a hit at Tottenham when he arrived at the start of the 2015/16 season, quickly being a mainstay in the first team despite his young age. He won back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, whilst also making it to the PFA’s Team of the Year in both campaigns.
The England international has dropped off in the last few years, with lazy performances and a questionable attitude on the pitch. Hopefully, the move to Everton can rejuvenate a player who may just require a fresh challenge to be back to his best.
Details of Dele’s permanent move to Everton was given by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who outlined the Toffees’ signing of the Englishman to be an initial free transfer, which could rise to up to €40m including add-ons, depending on performances.
As things stand, Dele is contracted to Frank Lampard’s team until the end of the 2023/24 season and will cost them €12m if he racks up 20 games. Spurs are very likely to get this transfer fee in the coming months if Dele can establish himself at Goodison Park.
In hindsight, we saw the downfall of one of Spurs’ brightest talents in the past few seasons, with Dele looking like a shadow of his former self recently. The player who once got fans off their seats was leaving the same fans frustrated with his end product.
For Dele’s sake, we hope the 25-year-old finds some form under Lampard at Merseyside and can work his way back into the national team set-up ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.
