Rodrigo Bentancur reveals his happiness at joining Tottenham Hotspur from Juventus
In an interview with the official Tottenham Hotspur club media, Rodrigo Bentancur has revealed his thoughts about joining Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites managed to lure the Uruguayan star to N-17 on deadline day.
The North Londoners signed the 24-year-old midfielder for a fee that could potentially be worth £21.5m. The Lilywhites have paid £15.8m upfront with add-ons worth £5.7m also being part of this deal.
Bentancur was a resolute part of the Juventus lineup ever since he joined them from Boca Juniors in 2017. He has played in 181 matches for the Bianconeri across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 18 assists in that time. His experience at the top level with Juve would certainly be useful for us.
In the interview with Tottenham Hotspur, the former Club Atlético Boca Juniors player seemed delighted to be a part of this new challenge in the Premier League. He explained how he is joining a club that consistently competes at the top level for trophies, and that he is honoured to don our famous white shirt.
“It’s a great Club with great players – always competing in all competitions. I was very happy when I heard about the interest in me and thankfully I’ve joined now. It’s a huge pleasure and an honour to be able to represent this shirt. As I said, it’s a brilliant Club and a great league that I’ve always liked and now I’m going to have the chance to enjoy it alongside the other great players that we have.”
What to expect from Bentancur at Tottenham?
Antonio Conte was given a timely boost last month, as Spur completed a double swoop for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur on deadline day. The Uruguayan central midfielder has made his way to N-17 on a deal that spans four and a half years.
A passionate figure on the touchline, the Italian manager demands that same vigour from his players on the pitch. He has proved his ability across the different leagues in Europe, where he won the Serie A with Inter Milan and successfully guided former club Chelsea to the Premier League title during his first season in England.
The 24-year-old Uruguayan spoke highly of Conte and expressed his eagerness to work with the 52-year-old, who is arguably a legend at the Allianz Stadium both as a player and a manager.
“I am looking forward to learning from Antonio Conte – I think he’s a great coach, he wants to win and gets 150 percent out of his players”
The departure of Dele Alli to Everton, Tanguy Ndombele on a loan move to Olympique Lyonnais, and Giovani Lo Celso on a temporary deal to Villarreal means that Bentancur has reduced competition in midfield.
The North Londoners have also struggled with squad depth this season, a fact that is highlighted by our underwhelming performances in the UEFA Europa Conference League and domestic cup competitions.

Only time will tell if Conte can get the best out of Bentancur as he has done with a bunch of other players in the past. Hopefully the 24-year-old will provide that spark that Tottenham need to propel them in the right direction in the future. Given that he is here on a permanent transfer and not a loan deal, he could well be the face of our midfield alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the near future.
