Tottenham Hotspur were unable to secure a move for Alvaro Morata in the January transfer window
According to Sport Witness (h/t Shields Gazette), Tottenham Hotspur failed in their attempt to land Spanish international Alvaro Morata in the January transfer window. Arsenal were also interested in the former Chelsea player but also fell short in their pursuit.
The 29-year-old showed a lot of promise during his time at Real Madrid with impressive loan spells with Juventus putting him on the world map. His credentials and potential saw Chelsea make a move for the Spanish striker in 2017. The Blues spent an initial fee of £58m with add ons in a contract that reached a princely sum of £70m.
While the move initially showed a lot of promise, Morata failed to live up to the expectations and deliver consistently. His time at Stamford Bridge was filled with a lot of turmoil having managed only 24 goals and six assists for the London-based club in 72 matches across all competitions.
He eventually returned to Spain with Atletico Madrid and is now once again on loan at the Allianz Stadium. He is also a regular for the Spanish national game and continues to yo-yo between being prolific and putting in a forgettable shift.
Would Alvaro Morata fit at Tottenham Hotspur?
Morata had previously worked under the tutelage of Antonio Conte during the Italian’s time at Chelsea. That being said, he struggled to maintain his consistency during that time for the west London club.
Harry Kane has had a roller coaster of a season so far having only managed five goals and two assists in 19 PL games this season, which is not healthy considering the numbers the English skipper has often put up.
While the likes of Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura have tried to deputise for him at times, the Lilywhites lack a backup striker who could comfortably challenge Kane for the position. Dane Scarlett is the only proper alternative but at 17, the teenager is still finding his feet at the top level.
Morata could have proven to be healthy competition for the English captain who has struggled to get going this season. The 29-year-old would probably not have replaced him straight away but with Spurs competition on several fronts, would have found opportunities for himself to impress.
While the need for a proper backup striker is quite evident, Morata’s inconsistency, not to mention stint, would Chelsea might not have endeared him to the Spurs faithful. While one cannot expect a backup ace to be prolific, he must at the very least be dependable when brought on to make a difference.

Morata is still with the Bianconeri and Spurs having already strengthened their side with youthful additions like Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur will be hoping that their team can put up more aggressive and sustained attacking performances in the matches to come.
Whether a move for the 29-year-old Spanish international will be on the cards next summer remains to be seen.
