Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte rates club’s January transfer business
According to The Guardian, Antonio Conte has provided his thoughts on the business done by Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window. They had left it very late on the deadline day to facilitate moves for both of their winter signings.
Spurs had it tough last month as they lost out on two of their major transfer targets. Adama Traore was prised away by Barcelona, whereas Liverpool intervened and stole Luis Diaz from right under Fabio Paratici and co’s noses. The North London side eventually completed two transfers, namely Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur, before the winter market closed.
Conte was candid in his approach and spoke his mind in the interview. He conveyed that Tottenham had backed him to the best they could in a difficult window.
The Spurs boss also spoke about the lack of options available in January further limiting the club’s options. All things said and done, landing both Kulusecski and Bentancur is a start.
“About the transfer market, I think the club tried to do the best and you know very well that January is not simple, it’s not easy and I think the club tried to do the best. It’s not simple and then to sign players you don’t have a lot of options. That’s it.”
Sigh of relief
There were some concerns among the supporters that the Italian boss could leave the club since Daniel Levy had failed to back him by getting the initial targets. Those thoughts were not without weight either since he has done a similar thing in the past with Inter Milan.
Despite showing great progress at the San Siro, the 52-year-old coach decided to leave them due to differences in opinion over the transfer plans. He wanted the Nerazzurri to back him further to gain more prominence in Europe, but the club instead chose to sell their assets to solve their financial crisis. He eventually left before Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi were sold to meet their needs.

For that reason, it is a sigh of relief for all of us to see that the Spurs boss understands the current situation. The Italian is aware that there is much work to be done but does not appear to be under illusions regarding the task ahead of him.
As such, we can conclude that the Italian manager is very much involved in the project he is building at N17. However, Paratici and Levy must be careful next summer as we do need more additions to our team. Let’s hope that they have learned from their mistakes and will try their best to prevent similar setbacks in the summer.
