Tottenham Hotspur to try again for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence amidst Leeds United interest

According to The Athletic [Subscription Required] (h/t NottinghamshireLive), Tottenham Hotspur are set to try their cards again to sign Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence amidst interest from Leeds United regarding a summer transfer. The youngster has seen himself attract a host of attention recently, following his excellent performances during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham saw their two bids for Spence get rejected in the January transfer window. They were eager to bring in a right wingback and targeted Adama Traore for that role. However, a move for the Spaniard fell through late last month, and Spurs turned their attention towards the youngster.

The 21-year-old still has two years left in his current deal, which would make him an expensive signing if Spurs have plans to facilitate a move. Moreover, they also face other obstacles in the form of interest from six other clubs. Arsenal, Brentford, Southampton, Roma and Inter Milan are also vying to get his signature alongside Leeds after this season.

Summer incoming?

Since the North London side failed to address the issue in the right wingback slot last month, they cannot afford to let this go by for much longer. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have not been good enough to warrant consistent minutes in that position.

Emerson has been a disappointment in the role even though he has done well on the other side. That being said, this is just his first season at N17, so he would need ample time to adapt to the new surroundings to showcase the talent he had shown at Real Betis.

Doherty has returned into contention recently, but it is still unsure if he can maintain that level and keep improving moving forward. As such, we must look at potential options who can come in and do a great job under Antonio Conte. The Englishman can be just what we need considering the displays he has dropped recently.

The interest from Marcelo Bielsa’s side and the other clubs should definitely tell us that the Championship star can do a solid job for us. If that is not enough, his performances against Arsenal and Leicester City in the FA Cup should be enough to make his case.

The Boro loanee is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, where he has helped them to get the better of the Gunners and the Foxes in quick succession. He is ready to take the next step, but it remains to be seen if Conte’s side would be the next destination or not.
