Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur express interest in Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes
According to the Portuguese publication Record (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in securing the signature of Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes. He was recently on the wrong side of a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City in the Champions League.
Tottenham are not the only club interested in signing Nunes as three other Premier League clubs are also in the fray. Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Everton are all keeping tabs on the situation, trying to gain an advantage in the transfer race. The latter recently scouted him during Sporting Lisbon’s 2-2 draw with Porto last Friday.
The 23-year-old is currently valued at £35million, which seems reasonable in the current market. Moreover, the midfielder still has four years left in the contract, making the asking price rather fair. The Portuguese club are likely to sell him at the end of this season if they fail to retain their league title.
Who is Matheus Nunes?
The Portuguese international usually plays as a central midfielder but can also be deployed as a defensive or an attacking midfielder when needed. His versatility can be a huge asset to Antonio Conte as the Italian needs his midfielders to be dynamic with their abilities on both sides of the pitch.
The Sporting ace has become a regular for club and country this year, having made the breakthrough with Portugal back in September. He also helped his side to a domestic treble while playing a crucial role in the journey. Nunes has made 37 appearances this season while scoring thrice and assisting five times across all competitions.
The Portugal Primeira Liga star possesses excellent dribbling skills and has shown the knack to craft opportunities both for himself and his teammates. He is of the right age to take the next step in his development and a manager such as Conte could help him achieve just that.
The Portugal midfielder also has the knack to keep his head in the game and is usually calm and composed even in high-pressure situations. For all these reasons, he could arguably replicate the job that Marcelo Brozovic did for Antonio Conte during their time together at Inter Milan.

Pep Guardiola recently showered praises on the Sporting ace for his solid performance despite the heavy loss that his team suffered against Man City in the Champions League. With Tottenham potentially seeking an overhaul in the playing squad, Nunes would be a shrewd addition.
That being said, we must be wary about the competition due to the relatively low price tag. If our January dealings have shown us anything, it is that the early bird catches the worm. Whether Daniel Levy and co will move fast to ensure past mistakes are not repeated remains to be seen. It remains to be seen how this situation would pan out in the months to come before next summer.
