Tottenham Hotspur prepared to wait to offer striker Harry Kane a new contract
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur are not planning to approach forward Harry Kane over a new contract at the moment, and are prepared to wait it out.
The Englishman is arguably Spurs’ best player, and the striker proved it once again on Saturday night after his brace helped his boyhood club beat defending champions Manchester City at home in the Premier League.
This comes months after Kane had a move to Man City collapsed after the club refused to sell him. Though Tottenham fans were happy to hold on to their star player, it remains to be seen if the player stays in north London beyond the current season.
Last summer’s drama may have had its effect on Kane, as he has often struggled in front of goals during the current campaign. The striker looks short of confidence and form, but it was all put to rest on Saturday for the big clash against Pep Guardiola’s men.
Ball in Kane’s court?
Despite having a rough start to the season under Nuno Espirito Santo, new manager Antonio Conte’s arrival seems to have revived the 28-year-old’s goalscoring ability. The Italian has placed his trust in Kane to deliver, and the forward repaid that faith at The Etihad.
Although Kane is seeing a gradual revival in form, it is said Tottenham ‘accept’ that the ball is in Kane’s court. The club expects their talisman to make the first move regarding a new contract given the current situation, and are prepared to wait for him to do so.
The England skipper is one of the league’s most prolific strikers, and City would have gained a valuable asset this season had Spurs given in to Kane’s wish. It certainly seems to be the Manchester club’s loss, as Kane put them to the sword and blew open the title race to Liverpool’s advantage.
Spurs meanwhile, will look to build on this win and put together a winning streak in upcoming fixtures as they aim to make the most of their multiple games in hand to climb up the Premier League table. Conte will be aiming for a top-four spot at the end of the season.

It is also claimed that in the event Kane expresses a desire this summer to leave Tottenham and the club refuse to give in once again, then the Englishman will stay and run out his contract in 2024, departing as a free agent aged 31.
The upcoming summer is sure to be an interesting one, with Kane’s future heavily depending on where Spurs finish this season. A Champions League spot is critical not just for Tottenham, but also for Kane to decide the next step in his career.
