Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte changes his mind about AC Milan target Steven Bergwijn
According to Calciomercato (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is willing to sell forward Steven Bergwijn this summer after changing his mind about the winger’s future at the club.
Bergwijn moved to Spurs only in January 2020 as Jose Mourinho eyed up forward options, and had a dream debut against Manchester City as he scored in front of the home fans to hand the visitors a 2-0 loss. However, the winger has now lived up to the same standards since.
Now, it looks like Conte is ready to move him on in the summer, as AC Milan may be interested in signing the player at the end of the season. If so, it would mark the end of a rather underwhelming stay at N17 for the Dutchman.
The Netherlands international is frustrated by a lack of game time due to the competition from other forwards in the squad. Furthermore, the club went and signed Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus last month, which only puts the Dutchman further down the pecking order.
Forgotten hero
Despite limited appearances, Bergwijn gave everyone a glimpse of what he was capable of against Leicester City last month as he scored twice in as many minutes at the death to turn things around for Spurs in a 3-2 away win. Due to his incredible performance, Conte was said to be keen to keep the star in his squad as an important forward option.
In fact, the club played hardball in January when Ajax Amsterdam came calling for the player. However, it now looks like Spurs could let him go for between £15m and £16.7m this summer if any club matches the price tag.
Bergwijn, in many ways, can be considered unlucky during his time at Spurs. With players like Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, and Lucas Moura ahead of him in the pecking order, the winger had to settle for substitute appearances in his Tottenham career.
There have been one or two standout moments in a Spurs shirt for the forward, but he has rarely shown the consistency to keep up his form and convince the manager that he deserves more minutes. Only 24, there may be much for the Dutchman to give in coming years if he finds a way to regularly keep up his good displays on the pitch.

In an inflated transfer market these days, Spurs have set a price tag that seems reasonable for other clubs to afford, almost as an invitation to snap up the player. AC Milan have not yet made an official offer, but it is said that directors Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara are both interested in the potential transfer.
The former PSV Eindhoven star still has a few months left in the season to work his way back into the side and show the club that he deserves to stay at the club and build a future in north London. His progress over the next few weeks will be interesting to watch.
