Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty reacts after scoring first goal for the club
Speaking to Spurs TV via Tottenham Hotspur Official website, Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty spoke of his delight after scoring a goal against Leeds United, as his side ran out 4-0 winners.
Spurs shook off midweek’s loss against Burnley to run riot against Leeds at Elland Road, putting in a convincing attacking display to keep their hopes of making the top four of the Premier League by the end of the season.
Doherty, who opened the scoring for the Lilywhites, said that he did not know how to react after scoring in the opening ten minutes of the game. The player said that finding the back of the net brought about a lot of emotions in him.
“It’s taken a long time, but it feels pretty good. Like I said, it’s been a long time, I guess (the celebration) was a culmination of a lot of different things that bring those emotions. I still don’t know how to celebrate properly! You kind of get lost, don’t you?”
The Irishman moved to Tottenham in 2020, but has not been able to establish himself as first-choice under the managers he has played under at the club. He faces competition for a place in the squad from Emerson Royal, who the side signed ahead of the current campaign.
First goal for Tottenham
The former Wolves defender had a brilliant day in Yorkshire yesterday, as the player scored a goal as well as kept a clean sheet against a poor Leeds side. The result saw the Peacocks sack manager Marcelo Bielsa after a terrible run of form.
Doherty spoke of his delight after netting his first goal for Spurs, saying that he was expecting to score after Ryan Sessegnon delivered an inch-perfect ball from the left flank for the player to steer past the Leeds keeper.
“I knew the ball was going to be right because ‘Sess’ was on the end of the pass and he’s got quality, so once he was there, I knew he was going to put it in the right spot, then it was up to me to get the right connection, fortunately this time around I did and it went in, my first goal for Tottenham.”
The Republic of Ireland international has not been manager Antonio Conte’s first pick at right wing-back for most of the season, but the defender gave the boss something to think about after his latest performance.
Emerson has been used more by the Italian, but the former Barcelona defender has not done much to prove that he is undroppable from the team. Doherty will hope that his latest display does enough for Conte to consider him for the next few matches ahead of Emerson.

All in all, it was a perfect afternoon for Tottenham as they look to shake off their terrible league form. Going into the Leeds fixture the side had lost four of their previous five league games.
Doherty will hope that his goal is a catalyst for both himself and his team to kick on from here and climb up the Premier League table. Currently in seventh place, the club will look to make it to the UCL spots by the end of the season, having a couple of games in hand to make up their position in the league table.
