Tottenham Hotspur face competition from up to 13 clubs to sign Djed Spence

According to The Express, Tottenham Hotspur would need to battle it out with up to 13 clubs across Europe to finalise a move for Djed Spence ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been sensational with his performances this season, prompting these sides to register their interest in signing him.

Tottenham had tried to facilitate a move for Spence in the January transfer window. However, they could not reach an agreement with Middlesbrough as they rejected two late offers for the fullback. Supposedly, the Championship side wanted at least £15million for his services.

There have been at least 12 clubs from Bundesliga, La Liga, and Premier League who sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old over the past few months. Boro are unlikely to hold on to the talented prospect since they could be in line to receive a massive windfall due to the potential bidding war that awaits them next summer.

Spurs made a mistake?

The North London club’s business in January was heavily criticised by the supporters, having lost out on multiple major targets to the competition. The Englishman could be another one of them if we fail to secure his signature in the coming transfer windows.

Considering how the Boro prospect performed on loan at Nottingham Forest, he was bound to garner more interest from elsewhere. The board should have predicted that and prised him away before interest in him increased. Unfortunately, they failed to do so and would now have to battle with several clubs to get our hands on the right-back.

Arsenal and Liverpool are claimed to be two of the interested parties, while Borussia Dortmund are touted as a possible destination as well. With many more heavyweights vying to reach an agreement, we must push ourselves ahead of them to prevent a repeat of what had happened in the winter transfer window.

The Middlesbrough loanee is currently assessing his options in front of him as he wants to make a reasonable decision regarding his future. He is considering moving to a team that would suit his attacking style of play. As our fans would have clearly known by now, our wing-backs are important to the way we attack under Antonio Conte.

That being said, the Championship defender is also open to moving outside England. As such, we must always be on our toes with these many clubs interested in signing him. Fabio Paratici must learn from his mistakes and put this matter to bed before leaving it too late as he did in January.

With Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty failing to make themselves one of the best right-backs in the league, maybe we do have space for a young attacking full-back like Spence to take the league by storm. But for that, we would have to sign him- and that doesn’t look like the easiest task in the world right now.
