Tottenham Hotspur targeting summer move for RB Leipzig youngster Josko Gvardiol

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol at the end of the season to bolster their leaky rearguard.

Gvardiol only moved to Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in 2020, but the player could very well be on his way to England in the summer if the interest from Spurs is genuine and the north London club moves quickly to snap him up.

The Croatian is said to be ahead of Pau Torres and Sven Botman in Tottenham’s list of defensive options. Spurs’ football director Fabio Paratici is looking to provide boss Antonio Conte with quality reinforcements at the back ahead of his first full season in charge at N17.

The Lilywhites are in need of top defensive additions, with the side going through a wildly inconsistent period of results and shipping in goals regularly. Their latest result saw them gall to Championship side Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.

Long-term option

Only 20 years old, the former Zagreb player could prove to be a wise investment for the future for Tottenham, as they look to usher in a new era under Conte. The manager has a knack for getting the best out of his players, and under the Italian’s tutelage, the Leipzig defender could blossom.

The fact that the centre-back is a Croatia international despite his young age speaks volumes about his talent, and based on his performances in the Bundesliga this season, north London could welcome a future star in the making if the club makes a summer move for him.

The defeat against Middlesbrough outlined just how important a summer rebuild may be for Tottenham, despite the side boasting of experienced players. Conte has quite a task on his hands if he wants to make this team successful, and new signings are essential for the Italian to work his magic.

The defence is certainly an area Paratici and Conte need to improve upon, with Cristian Romero and Eric Dier looking like the only two players at the back who look like they have enough quality to survive an entire squad overhaul.

If so, Gvardiol would make a great addition to Spurs. Known to be a quick defender with an eye for a pass, the Croatian is also versatile, capable of fitting in at left-back and defensive midfield.

A man with many talents despite being only 20, the more said about the Leipzig defender, the more he seems to be an ideal fit for Conte’s side next season. Only time will tell if the club makes an active move for him in the summer.
