Tottenham Hotspur favourites to sign Middlesbrough wingback Djed Spence this summer
According to Goal (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to sign Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence in the summer. The player is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest until the end of the season.
Spurs’ defensive frailties were exposed against Spence’s parent club Boro in the fifth round of the FA Cup, as the Championship side knocked them out of the competition with a goal in extra time.
Tottenham have been unable to keep their rearguard solid nor contribute meaningfully to attacks this season, and this is where right wing-back Spence could prove to be a useful addition.
Currently, the Lilywhites have Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal to call upon on the right flank, but neither have proven that they are untouchables in the starting lineup. Spence meanwhile, has been one of the Championship’s most exciting talents this term.
Leading the race
The 21-year-old has been a revelation this campaign for Forest, helping them reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, which they are due to play next week. On the way, they had beaten Arsenal and Leicester City, as the club have proven to be giant-killers in the competition.
Spurs are said to be leading the race for the talented youngster, but it may not be that easy to sign the player as Arsenal and Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the defender. Tottenham made an offer for the player in January and are expected to bid again this summer.
Despite playing an entire league below Tottenham, the interest surrounding Spence proves just how good he is. The fact that a European giant like Bayern are keen on the player makes it evident and we would have to do well to bring him in at N17 despite already having two senior right wing-backs.
Only 21, the defender may prove to be a wise investment for the future of the club. He is bound to only get better with age, and if he moves to Spurs, then he will have the guidance of manager Antonio Conte to help him with his career. Not too shabby, considering the Italian’s CV in Italy and England.

The Italian prefers to play a system with wing-backs bombing up and down the flanks, and Spence would fit in like a glove under the former Inter Milan manager. It’s a style of play that the Englishman is used to, playing a similar role at Forest this term.
It certainly has brought him results, with the defender scoring twice and picking up three assists this season in the Championship. Hopefully, he puts up similar numbers next campaign as well, playing in a Tottenham shirt.
