Valencia boss Jose Bordelas makes admission regarding Tottenham Hotspur loanee Bryan Gil
According to Super Deporte (h/t Daily Mail), Valencia manager Jose Bordelas was full of praise for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Bryan Gil. The youngster has found his feet again at Los Murciélagos after having a relatively rough patch with the Lilwyhites.
The 21-year-old forward was touted as one of the brightest young talents in Spain. The North Londoners spent a sum of £21.6m to secure his services in a deal with Valencia that also saw Erik Lamela go the other way last summer.
While he is still in the nascent stages of his footballing career, the Spanish international has found it tough to get going at Hotspur Way. In 20 appearances across all competitions for Spurs so far, the youngster has only managed to bag one assist.
As claimed by Super Deporte (h/t Daily Mail), Bordelas has been really impressed with the performance of Gil as well as that of Real Madrid loanee Hugo Duro. He also mentioned that the duo would be more than welcome to continue past the current season.
‘They are two players who have arrived and are giving us a lot. Right now we are focused on the current season and we don’t think beyond the day-to-day. They would undoubtedly be welcome to continue. We know about the difficulty and we know that it will be more difficult with Bryan because he does not have a purchase option. With Hugo there is.’
What’s there for Gil at Spurs?
The young Spaniard still has a long way to develop and at 21, could still be considered as one of the long-term assets should he develop to his full potential. His first few matches may not have gone as planned but this loan move to the Mestalla seems to have reignited his spark.
The club has also sent the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele out on loan to get more minutes under their belt. While that has reduced the kind of depth at the present moment, a change of scenery, albeit temporarily, could prove to be a great motivating factor for some players.
Gil is pretty young right now and moving to a whole new country can surely be intimidating for many. The Premier League also demands a certain level of physicality and intensity, with the player himself admitting that he found it difficult to deal with change in scenery.
The North Londoners have themselves been undergoing a transitional period with the club being managed by four different coaches ever since Mauricio Pochetino left the club. This staggering managerial turnover is also bound to put the players in a difficult position having to adapt to different systems in such quick succession.
The young Spaniard is starting to showcase his capabilities with the Spanish club, reminding us as to why the club spent a significant amount of money to secure his services. The 58-year-old Spanish manager has made it clear that Gil is more than welcome to stay past the current season.

Being in the Valencia setup could also provide him with some more experience and the Lilywhites could do well by letting the youngster mature more as a player with the Spanish club before trying to get him back to Hotspur Way once again.
There is no indication from Spurs if they would let the youngster extend his stay in Valencia, but it would certainly not be a bad idea if Gil has a good time there- considering it can be an important spell for him to develop to his full potential.
