Atletico Madrid star Yannick Carrasco confirms he rejected January transfer offers amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest
Atletico Madrid forward Yannick Carrasco has admitted that he rejected several offers in January, with Tottenham Hotspur having shown interest to sign him. He has been an integral part of his side so far in a season where they have struggled to replicate their form from the last term.
Tottenham were interested in signing the Belgian in January and were even ready to pay his £50million release clause before it expired alongside Newcastle United. Manchester United and Chelsea were also monitoring his situation, but Atletico were unwilling to listen to new approaches for the attacker. The winger has now confirmed that he did receive offers in the winter transfer window.
Speaking in an interview with RBTF (h/t The Sun), Carrasco has addressed the matter by saying that he had no intentions to leave Wanda Metropolitano in January. He added that his mind is fully set on carrying on his current journey with Diego Simeone’s side.
“A few clubs knocked on my door this winter, but I’m good at Atlético, so I wanted to continue my adventure here.”
Do we need Carrasco?
The 28-year-old has scored three goals and assisted six times this season from 33 appearances across all competitions. He could have been helpful for us considering the quality that he possesses, although it is better that we did not sign him in the end.
After all, the release clause would have been too expensive to be activated, plus we signed Dejan Kulusevski for a much lower fee from Juventus. Hence, our inability to sign Carrasco cannot be considered a “failure” at all, as we have been better off without him.
Kulusevski’s arrival has enabled Antonio Conte to use Steven Bergwijn on the left-wing, where he would play a back-up role to Son Heung-Min. We have a good blend of depth and quality at this instant, so spending that high of a fee for Carrasco would not have been feasible.

Son would obviously be the starter for us and the cost involved to get Carrasco would have been too high for someone who would play as the backup. Then again, Conte could have used him as a wing-back, with the Atleti man having the experience to play a defensive role due to the system used by Simeone.
Then again, the cost would not make sense, especially when we have the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon, who have fared well as left wing-backs. Our priorities have changed since then, so we probably would not rekindle our interest to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.
