Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur express interest in Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez
According to 90min (h/t The Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur have expressed their interest to sign Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez in the summer transfer window. He has been cast aside this season and has fallen out of favour with Jurgen Klopp due to the presence of other defenders in the squad.
Gomez is open to leaving Anfield at the end of the season due to the lack of game time. He wants to make it into the England squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. As such, he has plans to move elsewhere, which could provide a helping hand to Tottenham and their pursuit to secure his signature.
Spurs are not the only ones in the race, as several other Premier League sides are also keeping tabs on the situation. Antonio Conte’s side are keen to strengthen their backline next summer, and the Englishman could certainly help them in that regard. They are also seemingly confident at this point due to the defender’s desire to depart the Reds.
Gomez to join Spurs?
We definitely need a centre-back addition looking at the defensive issues we have faced in the past two months or so. The 24-year-old could help us in such a case as the defender has more than enough quality to be a commanding presence at the back for us. The summer signing of Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip’s recent rise and Gomez’s own injury issues have resulted in his lack of game time.
As such, we could use this opportunity to bring the Reds defender to our ranks, but we have to be wary of the other interested parties. We could be in for a difficult time in the summer transfer window because of a potential bidding war that could arise from this situation.
After all, the Merseyside club could play hardball since the Premier League ace will see his current contract expire only in 2024. They have no plans to sell the central defender, but an offer could be accepted nonetheless if such a bid arrives at the end of this campaign.

Cristian Romero and Eric Dier are the only reliable options we have in the backline at this moment. Ben Davies has done well in a makeshift role, but he has certain limitations due to not being a natural centre-back. Moreover, Davinson Sanchez has been unreliable as he still makes mistakes, whereas Japhet Tanganga could be upgraded with a better option.
Gomez can assist us in boosting the quality of our ranks after taking all these factors into account. The North London club seems to think that way since they consider him to be an ideal option. Whether he would sign for us or not remains to be seen in the coming months ahead of the next term.
