Hugo Lloris reveals what went wrong for Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United
Hugo Lloris has given his thoughts on what went wrong for Tottenham Hotspur in their 3-2 defeat against Manchester United yesterday. His side failed to get out of their unstable run of form, having lost yet another game after a victory in the previous fixture.
Tottenham had more control over the game as they had the better possession and even created several opportunities, which they failed to take advantage of. There were clear signs of improvements in their performances which makes the end result even more difficult to swallow.
However, football is a harsh sport and outcomes like this are a part of the game, which makes it entertaining at the end of the day. But if you are a Spurs fan, the club’s dwindling league form would perhaps be making you tear your hair out.
Speaking in the post-match interview with Spurs TV (h/t Football.London), Lloris weighed in on what Spurs could have done better and where they made the mistakes. The club captain pointed out their failure to manage the game better during certain phases resulting in their defeat in the Premier League fixture.
“We can only analyse the goal we conceded, I think we could have done better. We have some regrets because when we score the 1-1, we cannot concede three minutes later for 2-1 and then when we come back 2-2, I think is the moment to close the game.”
“There is different ways to close the game – to reduce the space, to keep possession of the ball and to be stronger in the momentum of the opponents. We conceded this corner and unlucky for us but big damage on the result.”
Time for self-reflection
What’s interesting is that Antonio Conte expressed the same problem with Spurs during his post-match press conference. The ex-Chelsea and Juventus boss mentioned that his team needs to improve upon their “game management”, which is now emphasised by the Spurs skipper in his own separate interview.
It is good to know that the manager and players like Lloris are on the same page with each other. The defeat is a really hard pill to swallow as it reduces our prospects of achieving Champions League qualification for the next campaign.
The way the North Londoners managed the game after levelling the scoring was really disappointing to see as they handed the momentum to the Red Devils in a matter of minutes. Moreover, the skipper himself could have done better even if all three goals scored by Cristiano Ronaldo were hard for him to intervene.
This result was really harsh on us, looking at how well we played yesterday. That being said, the disappointing loss would only make us stronger moving forward by focusing on the areas where we need to improve.

Since Lloris and Conte reiterated the same mistakes, we are hopeful that game management is something that we will work upon during the next training session to keep improving for a better future. Top four is certainly the aim after the club’s exit from all three cup competitions this season.
