Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Manchester City, Liverpool for Torino defender Gleison Bremer
According to Italian news outlet Tuttosport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Tottenham Hotspur would face off against Manchester City and Liverpool to secure the services of Torino defender Gleison Bremer in the summer transfer window. He is one of the highly-rated centre-backs playing in Serie A right now and would be a useful addition at N17.
Bremer was a hot prospect last summer as several European sides expressed their interest to sign him. However, the defender ended up signing a contract extension with the Italian club, which means that he is tied down with them until 2024. He is now expected to depart his team at the end of this season.
Man City and the Reds would give major competition to Tottenham, looking at their sporting success in recent years. That is especially the case with the Merseyside club since they have been monitoring him for the past three campaigns. That’s not all, as Juventus and Napoli are also in the mix as they look to prise the Brazilian away before their competitors.
Can Spurs pull off a coup?
The Serie A central defender has been impressive this season, having helped his side earn six clean sheets this term from 25 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he also has two goals and an assist to his name. His output has contributed to his team’s fight for a finish in the top half of the table, which is a realistic target by Torino’s humble standards.
It is no wonder why the 24-year-old has attracted attention ahead of the summer transfer window. The North London side must be on their toes at all costs looking at the calibre of the opposition in the transfer race. That being said, the prospect of playing under Antonio Conte and the project he is building helps our case as well.
We do need to bolster our backline after this season, looking at the struggles we have suffered under Conte so far. Joe Rodon has been cast aside by the Italian coach, which in and of itself calls for the need to bring in a defensive addition into our team next summer.
Davinson Sanchez has fallen out of favour having failed to take advantage of the chances that came his way. He has improved under the 52-year-old boss, but the odd mistake is still a part of his game. As for Japhet Tanganga, he has struggled to regain fitness after the injury he suffered two months ago. Not to mention, he can arguably be upgraded upon if we need a natural centre-back in our starting XI.
Ben Davies has been solid as a makeshift centre-back in the left-hand side of the defence but at the end of the day, he is a naturalized left-back. But if the Welshman settles in well in that role, then he and Eric Dier are two solid options we can bank upon.

With Cristiano Romero also in the mix, we do have a couple of top defenders. But considering we have three centre-backs playing in our formation, depth and quality is a must. Having lost Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in back-to-back summers, we can do with a solid addition at the back- one who can lead our backline for years to come.
