Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn picks up transfer interest from arch rivals Arsenal
According to Calciomercato (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn has caught the attention of arch-rivals Arsenal in the summer, with the Gunners looking at forward options at the end of the season.
Bergwijn moved to Spurs in 2020, becoming an instant Tottenham hero on his Premier League debut as his goal sealed a 2-0 win over Manchester City at home. Since then, however, the player has not been able to nail down a regular starting spot for the club.
This season as well, he has seen himself fall behind Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura in attack, and Dejan Kulusevski’s arrival in the winter transfer window has only pushed the winger down the pecking order.
He was last seen making a late substitute appearance against Brighton & Hove Albion last night, coming on in the dying minutes of the game as his team sealed a 2-0 win over the Seagulls in the league.
North London swap reported
With the Dutchman’s career stalling at N17, a summer transfer move to gain more minutes on the pitch may be on the cards as the club are said to be willing to listen to offers for the player. Arsenal has now joined the race to sign the 24-year-old, despite the hostilities between the north London clubs.
It is said that AC Milan are also keen on Bergwijn in the summer, and could snap him up for £15m. It remains to be seen whether the Serie A side is leading the race over the Gunners to secure the services of the Holland international, who will be desperate for a move away to play more first-team football.
A move between Spurs and Arsenal is very rare, given the historic rivalry between the two clubs and their absolute hate for each other. However, we have seen players in the past play for both north London sides, and perhaps, Bergwijn could join this list.
Sol Campbell was one of the few stars to have directly made the switch from the Lilywhites to Arsenal, and the Englishman’s reputation among Tottenham fans has since been tarnished. If Bergwijn moves, he can expect a similar kind of reception.

Given this, a move to AC Milan may work out better for the Dutchman, given that they too are keen on signing the player in the summer. Further, Tottenham would be wise to not strengthen any of their top 4 rivals.
Although an interesting and surprising transfer prospect, the Gunners may not be too confident of making the deal for Bergwijn work because of the rivalry with Spurs. Only time will tell if AC Milan can take advantage of this situation, and secure the services of the winger at the end of the season.
