Steven Bergwijn hints at Tottenham Hotspur exit ahead of summer transfer window
Steven Bergwijn has hinted at a possible exit from Tottenham Hotspur amidst a lack of minutes ahead of the summer transfer window. He has seen himself get cast aside by Antonio Conte in the past few weeks, which has seriously dampened his prospects of becoming a success at N17.
Bergwijn was called up to the Dutch national team by Louis van Gaal despite his lack of game time. The winger did not let his boss down, having scored two goals against Denmark in the first friendly while netting once in the second fixture against Germany. He has sent a message on his time at Tottenham following the 1-1 draw against Hansi Flick’s side.
Speaking after the game, as quoted by Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Evening Standard), Bergwijn has suggested that he is unhappy with his current situation by stating that everyone would want to play regularly. The forward added that he will not let himself get down by the current plight and will look to do his best during training sessions. Finally, he hinted that he would assess his options at the end of this season.
“I don’t get to play much at the club. I am happy that the national coach has called me up, that’s not obvious [thing to do]. You don’t forget about football. But of course, you feel that you don’t play that much. It was nice to be here again. We have a good and fun group. I wouldn’t know [whether form for the Netherlands can improve situation at club], we’ll see. Everyone wants to play of course. I have to keep my head up and work hard in training. Then we’ll see what happens in the summer.”
Unfortunate situation
It is baffling how the 24-year-old’s situation has turned out to be in the past few weeks or so. The supporters were hoping that his performances against West Ham United and Leicester City, for example, would be the breakthrough that he needed to finally make a mark at Spurs.
The Tottenham star was not allowed to leave in the January transfer window when Ajax came for him. The North London side even rejected a £15million bid from the Eredivisie side, with Conte having held talks with him regarding his future. The coach also previously mentioned that he counts on the attacker’s services which makes the current situation even more puzzling.

The Premier League forward has garnered three goals and an assist to his tally from just 337 minutes under Conte. That is a solid return for someone who has not enjoyed consistent game time during this period. Let’s hope to see a turnaround in the remainder of this campaign following the impressive international break he had this month.
Bergwijn has all the qualities to become a success for us so let’s hope that Conte manages his minutes better moving forward. Only time will tell whether the winger would have a future with us past this term or not as we near the summer transfer window.
